How to Create a Desktop Shortcut on Mac

How to Create a Desktop Shortcut on Mac

If you ever wished to quickly access specific folders on your Mac right from the Desktop, then you should consider creating an Alias, which is known as a shortcutin Windows.

An Alias is a folder that opens the actual file or folder that it links to. It can be moved to any directory on your Mac, but the actual folder or file will remain in the original location. In this way, you can create a shortcut for frequently-accessed folders on the Desktop and open it from there without having to navigate to the original directory where the files reside.

If you wish to create a desktop shortcut on your Mac, then the guide below will show you how to do it.

How to Create a Desktop Shortcut on Mac

Step 1: Open Finder.

Step 2: Locate the folder or file for which you’d like to create a desktop shortcut.

Step 3: Right click on the folder or file and select Make Alias.

Step 4: Choose the name for the Alias or leave it as is.

Step 5: Drag and drop the newly created Alias onto the desktop to use it as a shortcut.

Now whenever you double click on the Alias, it will open the original file or folder which it is linking to. If at any time you wish to delete the Alias, simply move it to Trash and it will be removed. This will not delete the original file or folder, but will rather remove the shortcut you had created.

That’s all you need to do to create a desktop shortcut on your Mac. If you face any problems, let us know in the comments below.
